All 48 L districts are supplied by United Utilities, which is notable at this size: an area with this many districts usually crosses at least one supply boundary, and this one does not.

The shape of the L area

The districts are wildly uneven: L20 holds 984 postcodes around Bootle and L68 holds 1, a ratio of about 984 to one. They divide into 413 sectors.

No single district dominates: the largest holds only about 5 per cent of the area's postcodes.

The numbering is not continuous. L runs up to 75 but has only 48 districts, so 27 numbers are unused:.

Several districts share a settlement, which is a common source of confusion when a form rejects an address: L1, L2, L3, L5, L6, L7, L8, L13, L15, L16, L17, L18, L69 and L70 all point at Liverpool, L14, L25, L27, L28, L34, L35 and L36 all point at Prescot and L4, L9, L20, L67, L71 and L75 all point at Bootle.

What borders L

L sits next to WN (Wigan) to the east, CH (Chester) to the south, WA (Warrington) to the south east, PR (Preston) to the north and BL (Bolton) to the east.

Its neighbours run in 4 different directions, so L is landlocked by other postcode areas on most sides.

Principal settlement is the town or city each district sits in or nearest to, derived from OS Open Names. It is not the Royal Mail post town, which is licensed data and not published openly. Status is resolved live from each company’s own notice.

Water hardness in L

No water company covering L publishes hardness figures as open data. The gap is named per district below so you know who to ask.

United Utilities does not publish hardness as open data, but does publish a water hardness factsheet with a full band table and a postcode water quality checker.
