26 districts are plotted without a label where labels would overlap; every one is in the table below.

Where G sits

It is administratively fragmented, reaching into Glasgow City, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire and East Renfrewshire and 4 other authorities.

Every G postcode is in Scotland. Water there is regulated by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, and Temporary Use Bans under the Water Industry Act 1991 do not apply in Scotland at all.

Water supply across G

All 54 G districts are supplied by Scottish Water, which is notable at this size: an area with this many districts usually crosses at least one supply boundary, and this one does not.

We are re-checking Scottish Water's status. It was last confirmed on 17 August 2026 as no restrictions, and until it is confirmed again this page does not assert a current position for it.

The shape of the G area

The districts are wildly uneven: G72 holds 1,282 postcodes around Uddingston and G79 holds 2, a ratio of about 641 to one. They divide into 229 sectors.

No single district dominates: the largest holds only about 4 per cent of the area's postcodes.

The numbering is not continuous. G runs up to 90 but has only 54 districts, so 36 numbers are unused:.

Several districts share a settlement, which is a common source of confusion when a form rejects an address: G1, G2, G3, G4, G5, G12, G20, G21, G31, G33, G41, G58 and G90 all point at Glasgow, G32, G40, G42, G43, G44, G45, G73 and G76 all point at Rutherglen and G11, G13, G14, G51 and G52 all point at Renfrew.

What borders G

G sits next to ML (Motherwell) to the south east, FK (Falkirk) to the north east, KA (Kilmarnock) to the south west, EH (Edinburgh) to the east and PA (Paisley) to the west.

Its neighbours run in 5 different directions, so G is landlocked by other postcode areas on most sides.

Principal settlement is the town or city each district sits in or nearest to, derived from OS Open Names. It is not the Royal Mail post town, which is licensed data and not published openly. Status is resolved live from each company’s own notice.

Hardness is published per census area, not per postcode, so these figures characterise a district rather than measuring one address. They are a scale and taste matter, not a safety one. Hardness data version wessex-water@2022-2025+yorkshire-water@2026.

No signup, no email wall. GeoJSON carries the district points, the supplier and the live status, so it can be dropped straight into a map.

District positions are averaged postcode centroids from OS Code-Point Open. They show roughly where a district sits, not where its boundary runs, and are not legal boundaries.

Frequently asked questions

How many postcode districts are in the G area?

There are 54 G postcode districts, running from G1 to G90, and they contain 32,454 live postcodes across 229 sectors.

What towns does the G postcode area cover?

G covers Glasgow, Rutherglen, Renfrew, Barrhead, Uddingston and East Kilbride. The area takes its name from Glasgow, and each district is listed with its settlement in the table on this page.

Which water company supplies G postcodes?

Scottish Water supplies all 54 G districts. Supply boundaries follow the pipe network rather than postcode geography, so confirm against your water bill if you are near the edge of the area.

Why do G1 and G2 both say Glasgow?

G1, G2, G3, G4, G5, G12, G20, G21, G31, G33, G41, G58 and G90 all serve Glasgow, covering different parts of it. A single town routinely needs more than one postcode district once it passes a few thousand delivery points, so this is normal rather than an error in an address.

Can I download a free G postcode map?

Yes. This page offers the G districts as GeoJSON, CSV and SVG, free and with no signup or email address required. The GeoJSON carries each district's position, its water company and its current restriction status, so it can be dropped straight into a mapping tool.

Why is the G area called Glasgow when it covers Uddingston?

G takes its letters from Glasgow, where the sorting office that served the area was based when the code was allocated. Uddingston is the largest settlement in the area today, in G72, but the area code follows the historic sorting geography rather than current population.

Which councils cover the G postcode area?

G reaches into Glasgow City, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, East Renfrewshire, East Dunbartonshire, West Dunbartonshire, Argyll and Bute and Stirling. A postcode area is not a council area: they were drawn for different purposes and a single district can sit across a council boundary, so your postcode does not tell you which authority you pay.
