It is administratively fragmented, reaching into Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, City of Peterborough and Norfolk and 3 other authorities.

Water supply across PE

All 36 PE districts are supplied by Anglian Water, which is notable at this size: an area with this many districts usually crosses at least one supply boundary, and this one does not.

Anglian Water has a hosepipe ban in force from 11 July 2026, covering the whole of PE.

The shape of the PE area

The districts are wildly uneven: PE28 holds 1,599 postcodes around Huntingdon and PE35 holds 13, a ratio of about 123 to one. They divide into 148 sectors.

No single district dominates: the largest holds only about 6 per cent of the area's postcodes.

The numbering is not continuous. PE runs up to 38 but has only 36 districts, so 2 numbers are unused:.

Several districts share a settlement, which is a common source of confusion when a form rejects an address: PE1, PE2, PE3, PE4 and PE5 all point at Peterborough, PE20, PE21 and PE22 all point at Boston and PE30, PE34 and PE35 all point at King's Lynn.
